Week Three: The Comic Strip
“Little Nemo in Slumberland” by Winsor McCay, as mentioned in class, is one of the first well known weekly comic strips of the time. The comic tells the adventures of a young boy named Nemo. He goes on extraordinary quests in his dreams. “Little Nemo in Slumberland” always starts with Nemo in his bed where he engages with a character from one of his dreams. The character then whisks him away in a magical way. After his adventure, he always ends up back in his bed, where he then fell out of his bed. I think this comic speaks to the mind of a child and how children rely on their imaginations; especially during times of distress or change. The comic was created before, during, and after WW1. This was a time where uncertainty dominated over the minds of the world and everyone was unsure of what would come of the future.
