Literature of Comics and Graphic Narrative Blog

     In class, I got the opportunity to read Weird Adventure Comics  NO. 433. This is a DC comic the was published in 1973 and this is an original publication. Being a Graphic Design student I mostly noticed the ads throughout the book. One of these ads was a two-page ad from Disney. This is extremely cool to see because even now, everywhere you look Disney is around us so even back then Disney was prominent. One of the ads was geared towards men. The advertisement stated not to be "Half A Man!" and to buy the subscription to the DC comics. I also picked Two-Fisted Tales NO.15. This is an EC comic published in the 1950s however this was reprinted in 1996. In this book, there were only ads on the front inside cover and on both pages of the back cover. Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud an interesting read. As I had mentioned before in class, I am not one to read a comic on my own accord, and I don't think this book helped because it was written like a comic. It was a difficult journey for someone like me to pick out the most important pieces.  As a student in graphic design, the part I most enjoyed was his examples of layout. Layouts and lockups are the most important thing to a graphic designer, they run your life. Scott McCloud was able to break down the layouts down into six different types. The one I found that was most interesting was "scene to scene" because it was able to take the reader through time and space. Something else that stuck with me was the difference in the way s ome comic artists favor realistic scenarios, ideas, and styles, while others may want to go more stylized and surreal.
